In its autumn programme for 2026, the LJJO, under the baton of Michel Schroeder, will initially focus on swing classics; alongside arrangements by Sammy Nestico, Frank Foster, Quincy Jones, Don Menza and Benny Carter for the Count Basie Big Band, the programme will feature further classics from the 1930s in arrangements by Thad Jones, Francy Boland, Bill Holman and Pete Myers. These are complemented by modern classics by artists such as Maria Schneider.
The State Youth Jazz Orchestra brings together the best young musicians from Schleswig-Holstein (aged 25 and under) to perform challenging big-band jazz. It is led by the Hamburg-based trumpeter, big-band leader and arranger Michel Schroeder. He is supported in his educational work by professionals from the NDR Big Band, amongst others.
The LJJO, which is run by the State Music Council, has been in existence since 1982 and is now one of the leading youth big bands in Germany. Performances at international jazz festivals and various radio and television recordings bear witness to the band’s remarkable quality and enthusiasm.
